Piero’s World: Pieran optics as revealed in “The Baptism”

Afterwards for days Piero’s world informs your own – the city streets, the placement of buildings, are as he painted them, or should be.

People’s ordinary faces, especially moon-faces, reveal the dignity he found in them, and every hand gesture is worth the watching.  Ordinary oddness.

Who wears clothing with such easy grandeur? Although each place now has the self-possession of Piero’s landscapes.  Angels and a man pulling off his shirt for baptism are at home in the same place.  Any stream is Jordan stream. In any air a dove may hover over whatever happens.

Afterwards for days you know you are blest.
