Message from the Vicar General - Fr Anthony Victor Smith SJ

Dear Parish Community

Please  see below a message from the Vicar General; Rev Gerald Gleeson.

Dear Bishops, Priests and Deacons,

It is with sadness that I advise you of the death of Fr Anthony Victor Smith SJ, who spent a significant part of his Ministry serving the Archdiocese of Sydney.  Fr Smith entered Eternal Life on Sunday 18th February, aged 70.

Born and educated in Perth before entering the Jesuit Novitiate in Victoria, his first appointment in Sydney was to St Ignatius’ College, Riverview in 1973-’74.  He returned there in 1979 and studied further at Canisius College, Pymble and then overseas before appointments to St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point, where he was Headmaster from 1986 to 2003.

Fr Smith spent the following eight years at Sacred Heart Residence, North Sydney and was Parish Priest there for most of that period before returning to Riverview, assisting with school chaplaincy and he was Chaplain to the Old Ignatians’ Union until 2014.  His pastoral ministry then continued from Arrupe House at Pymble.

I extend my deep sympathy to members of his family and to the Jesuit Community.

A Vigil Service will be held next Tuesday 27th February at 6.30pm in the Chapel of St Aloysius’ College, 29 Burton Street, Milsons Point.

Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul will be celebrated next Wednesday 28th February at 10.30am at St Mary’s Church, 42 Ridge Street, North Sydney.  Refreshments are to be served after the Mass, with burial to follow at Macquarie Park Cemetery.

May the soul of Fr Anthony Victor Smith SJ experience the resurrection promised by Christ.

Yours sincerely

Very Rev. Dr Gerald Gleeson

Vicar General – Archdiocese of Sydney
